12.07.12 – Attorney Gloria Allred and her client, Robin Tyler who litigated the Marriage Equality cases twice to the California Supreme Court and who challenged Prop 8 in California, held a press conference in Los Angeles, CA to react to the U.S. Supreme Courts decision to accept federal cases challenging Prop 8 and DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Ms. Allred and Ms. Tyler were the first in California to announce that they would attempt to overturn the ban on same sex marriage in California. In their first case, the California Supreme Court did strike down the ban on same sex marriage. As a result, Ms. Tyler and 14,000 other couples were permitted to marry. However, after that Prop 8 was passed and in the second California Supreme Court case the marriages that had taken place were upheld, but the court upheld Prop 8 and banned future same sex marriages in California.

05.04.12 – U.S. Army Private, Daniel Brazelton sentenced today and required to register for life as a sex offender.

The 16 year old victim of unlawful sexual intercourse by defendant Daniel Brazelton gave her victim impact statement today and held a news conference with her attorney, Gloria Allred, immediately after Brazelton’s sentencing on May 4, 2012 in Lancaster, CA. Brazelton has pled guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. He will be required to register for life as a sex offender. The crimes occurred when the victim was 14 years old.

Brazelton was arrested on a charge of rape of a minor when he was an Army Private on active duty in the U.S. Army. He escaped from military custody triggering a nationwide manhunt in which the LA County Sheriff indicated he should be considered “armed and dangerous”. Ms. Allred demanded an investigation into how this escape could have occurred. Brazelton was ultimately apprehended and an Army General apologized to the victim for Brazelton’s escape from army custody.

On Friday, February 17, 2012, a Federal Court ruled in favor of the women. At the news conference, the women discussed how they feel about the fact that they have just won their case. Ms. Allred commented on the legal victory and on whether or not women have a right to post on the internet that their ex-boyfriends are liars and cheaters if they have evidence to support that statement.

Ms. Tyler and Ms. Allred spoke about the decision made by the Court today, which decided that Prop. 8 is unconstitutional. Prop. 8 is the ban on same gender marriage in California. Ms. Tyler is a leading lesbian rights activist who became the first to marry in L.A. County because of the lawsuit filed on her behalf by Ms. Allred, which won her that right. Fournier explains how an intoxicated man was able to easily obtain a key to her room from the front desk without providing any identification, and then entered her room at night, and was able to get into bed with her to assault her while she was in bed asleep.
